老挝人民民主共和国(以下简称老挝),面积23.68万平方公里。人口706万(2018年),分为50个民族,分属老泰语族系、孟—高棉语族系、苗—瑶语族系、汉—藏语族系,统称为老挝民族。居民多信奉佛教。华侨华人约3万多人。官方语言是老挝语。

首都万象,人口90万(2018年)。最高平均气温31.7℃,最低平均气温22.6℃。

老挝位于中南半岛北部的内陆国家,北邻中国,南接柬埔寨,东临越南,西北达缅甸,西南毗连泰国,边界线长度分别为508公里、535公里、2067公里、236公里、1835公里。湄公河在老挝境内干流长度为777.4公里,流经首都万象,作为老挝与缅甸界河段长234公里,老挝与泰国界河段长976.3公里。属热带、亚热带季风气候,5月至10月为雨季,11月至次年4月为旱季,年平均气温约26℃。老挝全境雨量充沛,近40年来年降水量最少年份为1250毫米,最大年降水量达3750毫米,一般年份降水量约为2000毫米。

老挝全国划分为17个省、1个直辖市(万象市)。

老挝经济以农业为主,工业基础薄弱。1986年起推行革新开放。1991年至1996年,国民经济年均增长7%。1997年后,老挝经济受亚洲金融危机严重冲击。

2019年,国内生产总值190亿美元,人均国内生产总值2765美元,国内生产总值增长率6.1%。

The Lao People's Democratic Republic (hereinafter referred to as Laos) covers an area of 236800 square kilometers. Laos is an inland country in the north of Indochina Peninsula, bordering China in the north, Cambodia in the south, Vietnam in the East, Myanmar in the northwest and Thailand in the southwest. The boundary lines are 508km, 535km, 2067km, 236km and 1835km respectively. The main stream of Mekong River in Laos is 777.4km long and flows through the capital Vientiane. As the boundary between Laos and Myanmar, it is 234 km long and the boundary between Laos and Thailand is 976.3 km long. It belongs to tropical and subtropical monsoon climate. The rainy season is from May to October, and the dry season is from November to next April. The annual average temperature is about 26 ℃. Laos has abundant rainfall. In the past 40 years, the youngest annual precipitation is 1250mm, the maximum annual precipitation is 3750mm, and the general annual precipitation is about 2000mm.
Laos is divided into 17 provinces and 1 municipality directly under the central government (Vientiane City).
Laos's economy is dominated by agriculture and its industrial foundation is weak. Reform and opening up have been carried out since 1986. From 1991 to 1996, the national economy grew at an average annual rate of 7%. After 1997, Laos' economy was seriously impacted by the Asian financial crisis.
In 2019, the GDP was 19 billion US dollars, the per capita GDP was 2765 US dollars, and the GDP growth rate was 6.1%.
