The meeting was co-chaired by Ambassador Akira Chiba of Japan to ASEAN and Ambassador Urawadee Sriphiromya of Thailand to ASEAN, the coordinator of ASEAN-Japan relations.

In their speeches, both conference moderators highly appreciated Vietnam's contribution as the coordinator of ASEAN-Japan relations for 2018-2021. The Thai ambassador thanked the Vietnamese delegation to ASEAN for the conscientious and responsible handover of the coordinating country position to Thailand after the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting in August 2021.

The ASEAN countries highly appreciated Japan's contribution to ASEAN, especially its support to ASEAN in combating the New Crown Pneumonia epidemic, and hoped that the two sides would further strengthen cooperation in areas such as sustainable development, climate change, and smart cities.

Japan is ASEAN's fourth largest trading partner and one of the top four or three foreign investors, with the country's investment in ASEAN reaching US$8.5 billion in 2020, accounting for 6.2 percent of total foreign investment in ASEAN.

The two sides also exchanged views on the preparations for the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relations (1973-2023).

In his speech at the meeting, Ambassador Nguyen Hai Peng welcomed Japan's new initiatives to promote cooperation with ASEAN. He stressed that the Japan-ASEAN Climate Change Action Agenda 2.0 and the Asian Energy Transition Initiative (AETI) will be a good complement to the ASEAN Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan for 2021-2030, effectively helping ASEAN to achieve its targets on addressing climate change and reducing carbon emissions.

Vietnam is ready to actively participate and contribute to the commemorative activities in 2023, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN-Japan and the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan relations. (End)
