Water levels in the Mekong River, which flows through several countries in Southeast Asia, have risen this year after four years of low flows and drought, the Vientiane Times reported.
The Mekong River recorded its highest water level in several years in the first four months of 2022 due to increased rainfall, the Vientiane Times reported, citing data from the Mekong River Commission, a multinational government body.
As more sediment and nutrient inflows increase fish stocks, this will improve fishing and agricultural yields, benefiting the 70 million people in the Mekong Delta.
However, Win Nai, director of the TECHNICAL support Department of the Mekong Secretariat, said rising water levels in the Mekong river had not eliminated the risk of moderate drought. Data show that between 1961 and 2021, water levels in the lower Mekong remained below the 60-year average.
Last year's rainy season began as late as July and ended in October, a month shorter than usual. More precipitation this year means an increased risk of heavy rains and flash floods.
Meteorological indicators of the Mekong River Basin showed that from November 2021 to April 2022, the lower Mekong basin was wetter than usual, and the accumulated rainfall in 2022 was about 25 percent higher than the average.
Data from monitoring stations showed that this year's water level was significantly higher than in the 2019 to 2021 drought years, according to Lao media. For example, water levels at Thailand's Chiang Saen monitoring station rose from 1.84 meters on March 2 to 3.25 meters on May 11. The water level rose 2.22 metres between a monitoring station in Cambodia's Upper Treng district and Kampong Cham province.
We have learned, total length of 4800 kilometers of the Mekong river originated in the qinghai-tibet plateau, flows through China, myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, it is in the world after the amazon river is the most important cradle of aquatic biodiversity, especially rich fish resources, river basin tens of millions of population must rely on the river to have a meal, the importance of the Mekong river for fishing and shipping industry is self-evident.
Of the 13 DAMS currently built on the main Mekong, 11 are in China and two are in Laos. The Mekong River Commission, made up of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, has repeatedly recommended that the four lower Mekong countries strengthen coordination of hydropower DAMS and storage operations in the Mekong basin to mitigate the effects of the drought.
